From all the foreign volunteers that joined the German armed forces in WW2, the single largest group consisted of estimated at least 1 million Soviet citizens, with some estimates being as high as more than 2 million. They came from the various Soviet republics with different ethnic backgrounds, while ethnic Russians making up the largest proportion.
