Trump Gets Revenge in South Carolina, GOP Wins Texas Democratic Stronghold
Primary season continued Tuesday with elections in four states: Nevada, South Carolina, Maine and North Dakota. Former President Donald Trump and economic woes loomed over key races.
In South Carolina’s GOP primary, the former president’s chosen candidate toppled a House Republican who voted to impeach Trump. However, another GOP representative survived her primary after spurring a Trump-backed challenger.
Meanwhile, Mayra Flores is on track to become the first Latina Republican to represent Texas in the House. Flores won a special election in a heavily Democratic and Latino district, another ominous sign for Democrats.
Bruce Poliquin won Maine’s Republican primary for a politically mixed House seat currently held by a Democrat. The district voted for Trump in 2020.
In Maine, former Republican Governor Paul LePage was unopposed in the primary as he seeks to return to his old job. LePage’s brash and confrontational style predated Trump’s presidency.
