What Rhodesians & South Africans thought about America – We were so disappointed
This is from an email to an American military veteran:
There is much to talk about. But I lack the time now, however I will return. I like to step away from military stuff to view it purely as military without emotion, or morality, etc, etc. I think our people have become over-moralised and it is also an indication of our characters and minds. We do not do things without some forward thinking. Our entire race is like this. It is a sign of the innate discipline in ALL WHITES WITHOUT EXCEPTION. For us, keeping our actions in line with our thoughts is as natural as breathing air, or as natural as it is for a Jew to lie in a heartbeat. I view war strictly as a discipline – like you would, say, engineering. You do not concern yourself with other matters. However, you as a life long soldier – you can speak from reality whereas I only speak from theory and nothing more. Living in unstable countries all my life however has helped me a lot. You get used to a lot of stuff. This is natural. We are also very adaptable. All whites are. They just don’t know it or realise it.
If there is one thing I must tell you it is this: We Whites in Africa NEVER viewed America as an enemy, even as America was stabbing us in our backs and kicking us straight in the teeth. There never was a time I can recall where we felt anger or hatred to America. We ALWAYS, WITHOUT FAIL, saw ourselves as fighting and hating the same people who were, apparently, America’s enemies. For us, America was just a mysterious and weird disappointment. We felt we were 100% on your side and why don’t your leaders see that? Now that I’m older I know better and why. In many respects we were like children – innocent in our own beliefs and unaware of how the world really works. But I can’t reiterate enough, that we never had animosity or hatred towards America. We saw ourselves as fighting a war that you would have fought yourselves. The parallels between Vietnam and Rhodesia were a case in point. We looked at your troops in Vietnam and we said: Well, that is exactly the same enemy as we are fighting. Their methods are exactly the same, they are funded by Russia and China, as are our enemies. We are fighting the same war as you. And we could not grasp why you would fight in Vietnam, at great cost, with masses of military equipment, yet you would ignore our fight which was exactly the same against exactly the same enemies supported by the same countries. It mystified us to be frank with you.
But now I understand many things I did not understand then.
